Changing the Narrative or Changing the Skill?

There are many reasons for making changes to your lists of skills. In doing so, however, you should be aware of the impact your actions, and the timing of your actions, could have on the consistency and integrity of the data throughout your training environment. This is particularly important when working in a Current Revision of a skill list.

Before you add, edit or delete any skills-related data within SkillsPlus, ask yourself if your intention is to change the narrative of the skill or to change the actual skill itself.

Changing the Narrative is any editing action that you take that does not alter the intent of the skill. Examples include correcting typographical errors, and rewording a skill so that it is more easily understood by the reader.

Changing the Skill is any action that purposely changes the intent of the skill. This includes rewording a skill to the point where it takes on a new meaning.

The next question is to ask yourself when you plan to undertake one of these actions. While it is preferable to make all changes to skill lists in between training cycles, Changing the Skill during a training cycle has the potential for creating confusion and inconsistency throughout your data, including the potential lose and misrepresentation of competency achievement records.

The effects of Changing the Narrative also cause less of an impact when conducted in between training cycles. However, even when conducted during a training cycle, any confusion over discrepancies that may show up between pre- and post-change descriptions are minimized by the fact that the intent of the skill remains consistent.
